In conjunction with your primary care physician or dermatologist, plastic surgeons act as an integral part of your skin cancer therapy. Your dermatologist may remove your skin cancer utilizing a special technique called Mohs surgery. They may refer you to a plastic surgeon for reconstruction of the defect created after removal. This may involve the use of local skin flaps or skin grafts to obtain closure. In addition, your plastic surgeon may perform removal of suspicious or cancerous lesions and perform the reconstruction at the same time.
These procedures are usually performed in the office setting under local anesthesia. Recovery is usually one to two weeks.
