Skin Grafting

Skin grafting is used to treat some open wounds, repair defects, release scars, and assist the healing in burned patients. Each wound needs to be individualized by your plastic surgeon for the need for skin grafting.
The technique of skin grafting involves shaving a very thin portion of skin from the uninjured part of the body and applying it to the wound or defect. The site from where the skin is taken typically heals on its own as "brush-burn" or may be closed with stitches.

Skin grafting is usually performed in a hospital operating room under sedation or general anesthesia. A three to five day hospital stay may be required for recovery as the graft heals. Final skin graft healing may take up to six weeks. Normal activities may begin after graft healing is complete.
