Wounds may be caused from a variety of mechanisms including trauma, accidents, surgery, or poor blood flow. Various techniques, both surgical and non-surgical are used to treat these wounds.
Non-surgical wound care includes daily dressing changes which may be performed at home by one’s self, or with the assistance of a visiting home nurse. Your plastic surgeon will advise you as to the best dressing type for your particular situation.
Surgical treatment of wounds may require cleaning of the wound in a hospital operating room, along with a skin graft, skin flap or muscle flap to close the wound. Plastic surgeons are experts at treating these types of conditions. These more complex wounds may require longer hospital stays with the later addition of home nursing.
Burns create a special type of wound which may occur through heat, chemical, or electrical exposure. All have the potential to injure not only the skin, but also the deeper underlying structures. In addition medical treatment, your plastic surgeon may recommend the application of topical antibiotic agents along with potential skin grafting (hyperlink to our section on skin grafting), to treat burn wounds. More severe injury may require hospitalization and rehabilitation.
